Here London24 Sport recalls some famous incidents that have seen players and managers sanctioned following altercations with people, or objects, from off the pitch.

ERIC CANTONA

One of the most high-profile incidents in the Premier League’s history is undoubtedly Cantona’s kung-fu style flying kick on a Crystal Palace fan at Selhurst Park in 1995. The Frenchman, who was making his way off after already being red carded, flung himself at a fan in the first row. He was subsequently banned for eight months by the Football Association and, after United fined him an additional £20,000, added a further £10,000 to his sanction.

ARSENE WENGER

The Arsenal manager was sent to the stands by referee Mike Dean at Old Trafford after he kicked a water bottle in disgust in 2008. Wenger initially refused to concede his position leading to the famous picture of him, with arm’s outstretched, stood on a wooden stage next to the Gunners’ dugout with the nearby United fans sarcastically applauding.

ESTABAN

A Dutch Cup match in 2011 was abandoned after 38 minutes when AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper Estaban was red carded for kicking an Ajax fan who had confronted him on the pitch. Estaban subsequently had the card rescinded by the Dutch FA after it was revealed the fan had kicked him first. Ajax later handed the teenage fan a lifetime ban.

PAOLO DI CANIO

Italian playmaker Di Canio had been known for his artistic temperament during his time in Serie A, which saw him leave Juventus under a cloud following a spat with boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

In 1998 the then-Sheffield Wednesday player ended up in hot water again, this time for pushing referee Paul Alcock to the ground after being sent off.

Di Canio was given an 11-game ban, while Alcock was mercilessly mocked by football fans for his animated tumble to the ground.

ASHLEY VICKERS

A non-league football match between Dorchester Town and Havant & Waterlooville ended up gaining worldwide attention - but it had nothing to do with the result.

Dorchester player-manager Ashley Vickers, 39, was sent off for tackling a pitch invader dressed in a mankini. The FA later rescinded Vickers’ three-match ban following an appeal.

EDEN HAZARD

The Chelsea midfielder was sent off after appearing to kick a ball boy who was laid on the ball after it went out of play. Hazard appeared to be trying to free the ball but instead seemed to make contact with the boy who was left writhing on the ground. Both apologised to each other after the match.
