The West Ham v Tottenham game at Upton Park went off relatively trouble free according to Newham Police Superintendent

Newham Police have praised the overwhelming majority of fans at the West Ham v Tottenham Hotspur game at Upton Park last week after the match passed without any serious incident.

A concerted police operation was launched for the match on Monday, February 25 after problems at the corresponding fixture at Spurs last November and match commander, Superintendent Craig Haslam praised the evening as a success.

“The vast majority of the fans were well behaved and enjoyed the game,” said the superintendent. “The policing operation went well and I’d like to commend the professionalism of all those involved.

“I’d like to praise the supporters from both clubs – they worked well with the officers on the ground, were patient, good natured and enjoyed the evening in the best spirit.”

The night was not entirely trouble free, but incidents were certainly isolated.

At around 8pm, officers identified a group of approximately eight people in the Trevor Brooking Lower Stand taking part in anti-Semitic racial chanting where one of the group was also seen to make a Nazi-style salute towards Spurs supporters.

No arrests were made at the time, but investigations are now underway with West Ham United to identify those concerned.

A separate incident occurred at 8.15pm when a police officer witnessed a man in the crowd make what police believed to be a Nazi salute.

Police entered the crowd and arrested a 25-year-old man for a section five racially aggravated public order offence.

He was taken to an east London police station where he was bailed pending further enquiries.

West Ham had gone on record before the game to say that anyone who they find to have acted in an inappropriate way, would be banned by the club.

But considering a crowd of over 34,000 in the ground, two isolated incidents seem to have been a considerable success both for the police and for West Ham United on the night.

Despite the 3-2 defeat, it was a night to remember the late, great Bobby Moore and the minute’s applause for him, as well as the parade of past players was excellently observed by the supporters of both teams.
