Hammers defender Winston Reid signs a two-year extension to his contract

West Ham defender Winston Reid has been rewarded for his magnificent form this season with a two-year extension to his contract which will keep him at Upton Park until the summer of 2015.

Reid and fellow defender James Collins have been the shining lights in a Hammers team that secured safety in the Premier League at the weekend, despite a 2-1 defeat against deposed champions Manchester City.

He put in another solid display, but was predictably disappointed at the team’s defeat.

“We had some chances, but we were just a bit poor in the final third and with the final pass,” he said on Saturday. “We tried to press them a little bit higher in the second half which worked and we finally got a goal, but it is difficult going to Manchester City, they were last year’s champions and they are a very good team.”

On and off the field, the New Zealand international is delighted to sign a new deal.

“I’ve really enjoyed being here,” said the 24-year-old, who grew up in Denmark after emigrating at the age of 11. “It’s a good club and we’ve done really well over the last couple of years. Now I’m looking forward to the next two years.”

It is a far cry from his first campaign at Upton Park. He was signed by Avram Grant after some eye-catching performances for New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but his first season proved something of a disaster, though much of it was more to do with his manager than his own performances.

He bounced back superbly under Sam Allardyce as West Ham returned to the Premier League at the first time of asking and he has kicked on since then with some superb performances for the Hammers this season as the team have marched to 10th place.

It is a mark of how far Reid has come during his time at Upton Park and with what high regard his manager has for him, that the youngster has filled in as captain when Kevin Nolan and Mark Noble have been sidelined – that would have been inconceivable under Grant, who shunned him for much of West Ham’s relegation season.

“I think I have played some good football over the last two years, but that goes for the whole team as well,” he said. “Hopefully we can continue that and of course we can now plan to build on the last two seasons.”

And it would be no surprise if he did so wearing the captain’s armband.

He has received one reward in a new contract, now he is favourite to collect the Hammer of the Year award. It has been quite a year for the modest defender.

Now his future has been secured, Reid is looking forward to the prospect of the Club’s impending move to the 54,000-capacity Olympic Stadium.

The Independent Supporter Consultation into the move to Stratford ends tonight at midnight and the defender has urged fans to make sure their voice is heard before the deadline.

“It is an exciting time for the Club. The fans have a chance to give their opinions and ideas this week with the consultation which is really important. They are the ones who back us week after week and I am sure, even though it is three years down the road, they are already looking forward to seeing what can be done when we move there.”

The West Ham United Supporter Consultation regarding the move to the Olympic Stadium closes at midnight on Tuesday April 30. To take part or for further information, visit whufc.com
