The hosts might have had a penalty in the first half when Marouane Chamakh, who had two headers saved by Cesar, was wrestled to the ground by Clint Hill and Shaun Wright-Phillips caught him in the act of shooting.

Allardyce, who is still to decide how to respond to an FA misconduct charge for comments made after the midweek FA Cup loss at Manchester United, said: “Looking at the replay, it looks like Howard Webb’s not in a great position to see it on Chamakh. I don’t think the referee’s in a position to have a clear view of the incident.

“Whatever happened today we just couldn’t seem to get the ball in the front of the net as often as we should’ve done.

“When we beat the goalkeeper there seemed to be somebody on the line to block it. It’s been a very frustrating day for us.”
