West Ham co-chairman David Gold says that the offer they have made to goalkeeper Robert Green should meet his requirements

After the drama of West Ham’s return to the Premier League at Wembley on Saturday and now the job of manager Sam Allardyce is to build a team capable of staying there.

The new season begins on August 1 and there is plenty of work to do, beginning with an attempt to keep Robert Green at the club.

Co-chairman David Gold confirmed that a new deal is on the table for the England goalkeeper, whose current contract runs out this summer.

“Now that we are in the Premier League things are different,” explained Gold.

“Obviously another season in the Championship would not have met Rob’s aspirations, but we have an offer on the table that should meet his requirements.

“Hopefully we will wrap that up in the next four or five weeks – there is no hurry.”

Back-up keeper Stephen Henderson signed a permanent deal with the Hammers on Monday, but if Green does leave, then it seems Blackburn’s Paul Robinson is likely to be top of the wish list for Allardyce.

The boss must decide who to offer new deals to over the next week or so with Abdoulaye Faye, Papa Bouba Diop, John Carew and Julien Faubert all out of contract.

Most, if not all, are likely to be on their way out of the exit door, but while money is available to strengthen the team during the summer, Gold would not be drawn on how much.

“I think it is really unwise for me to give an amount until we sit down with Sam,” he said.

“It all depends on who stays and who leaves. Let’s say Rob Green was to turn down our offer, straight away Sam’s got that money to use.

“It is very difficult to give you a ball park figure, because it is meaningless at the moment

“Until Sam tells us who he is going to keep, who he is going to sell and who he is going to let go, it’s impossible.”

That budget will be decided in the next week or so, but in the meantime it is a time for celebration for the Hammers after a nerve-racking, but enthralling day at Wembley, where the West Ham fans excelled themselves.

“It is a brilliant feeling,” said goalscorer Carlton Cole. “I have never played at Wembley with such an atmosphere.

“I am not criticising England, but today the fans were immense.

“I couldn’t hear the Blackpool fans, that’s how big it was.”

Hammer-of-the-Year Mark Noble echoed those sentiments: “The support was incredible. I don’t think there was a spare seat in the West Ham end of the ground.

“The support we have had all season, especially at away games has been fantastic,” said Noble, who suffered the misery of relegation last season before bouncing back this time round.

“The highs and lows of being at this club are incredible,” he said.

“I have been through it especially and this is just another emotion and a memory that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Hammers fan Noble is speaking for every West Ham supporter with remarks like that, while the last word is reserved for Gold.

“The pride is back at West Ham United,” he said.

He is absolutely right!
