West Ham legend is backing Carlton Cole to succeed

It was magnificent to see the West Ham boys storm to victory against the European champions on Saturday, but I have to say that I wasn’t that surprised to see it.

I was over at Crystal Palace on the day, but got their nice and early to take up my position in front of the telly and they must have thought I was barmy, watching the game and jumping up and down when the goals went in!

There are clearly problems at Chelsea and I said last week this was a great time to play them, but enough of them, I want to praise the West Ham players and the manager as well.

Chelsea were much the better team in the first half, but this is where a manager earns his money because Sam’s substitutions and change of tactics were inspired.

Mo Diame changed the game, but I would also give special praise to Matt Taylor who has struggled with injuries but looked superb.

West Ham upped the tempo after the break and that is what the fans love to see from their team.

I remember going to Stamford Bridge back in 1986 when we were both going for the title and winning 4-0, that was a memorable day, but Saturday must be the best West Ham result for a few years.

They did it without Andy Carroll as well. I was down the training ground on Friday and the place was absolutely buzzing about the Chelsea game.

But I also found out then that Andy would be missing for five or six weeks and that is a huge blow, though West Ham do have the back up.

I have always been a fan of Carlton Cole. When he is playing well he can be a real handful and I was so pleased that he got his chance and took it, because it must have been frustrating for him being behind Carroll all the time.

He scores his goals in batches, but then I think all strikers do. It certainly was the case with me, nobody knows why, that is just the way it is.

If last week was a good time to play Chelsea, then there can surely be no better time to take on Liverpool than this weekend.

They will be without Luis Suarez and unlike West Ham they really don’t have the back-up players to replace him.

It won’t be an easy game of course, it never is against Liverpool and they still have a lot of excellent players, but I am very hopeful about this game and I could see the Hammers taking all three points.

I must be about the only person who likes it when West Ham have a Sunday game because it means that I will be able to be there.

It is Crystal Palace again for me on Saturday – I go where Sky send me! – but I can’t wait to get down to the Boleyn on Sunday and hopefully see West Ham earn another three points.
