Liverpool are less of a threat without Suarez, says Allardyce

Sam Allardyce believes that Liverpool’s loss of Luis Suarez will be West Ham’s gain as the in-form striker sits out a one-match suspension tomorrow’s Premier League clash at Upton Park.

The Uruguayan has scored 10 times in 15 top flight games this term while the rest of the Reds squad has only managed nine strikes between them.

With the 25-year-old’s attacking off the agenda the Hammers boss is targeting another big scalp after last week’s derby victory over Chelsea.

“We’ve looked at the situation and from our point of view we’re pleased that Luis Suarez is not playing because he has been an outstanding centre forward in the Premier League this season.

“Without him, they are not quite as big of a goalscoring force as they would be with him, so we want to take advantage of that on Sunday.”

The east Londoners have been on a high after the stunning second half comeback to beat their rivals from west of the capital 3-1 and the manager has called for the same intensity against Liverpool.

“We all felt the euphoria of what we achieved last Saturday [against Chelsea],” Allardyce said. ”Our second-half performance was full of outstanding ability and we over-ran one of the top teams in Europe.

“We hit such levels of performance in the second half that it’s now my job to sustain that because sustainability is the most difficult thing to do in the Barclays Premier League.

“After performances like that you can get a dip so it’s my job to make sure we don’t have a dip after that type of performance because we’ll need to be up there again to beat a team like Liverpool. It’s about the lads trying to maintain their outstanding level from last weekend.”

Allardyce will be without on-loan striker Andy Carroll, who cannot play against his parent club anyway but has also picked up a knee injury which is set to keep him out for up to six to eight weeks.

And the Hammers chief will look to Carlton Cole to make the most of the Geordie’s absence, having netted his first goal of the campaign against last week.

Allardyce said: “It was a great comeback in terms of the fact he has waited patiently and I think his performance overall, including the goal and the time he scored it, was obviously a key element in us going on to win the game.

“I hope he can carry it on and continue to score goals because that has been one of our slight weaknesses - that our centre forwards haven’t really scored enough.

“Everyone else has because we’re one of the best clubs for sharing out goals in the Premier League. We’ve had lots of players scoring goals (14 so far) but we’ve not had anybody rattling the goals in apart from Kevin Nolan.

“Our great win came from clinical finishing and we want to continue that if we can.”
