Our Hammers blogger is excited by the new signings at Upton Park
Anyone else loving this ambitious aggression being shown by West Ham in this summer’s transfer window?
Diego Poyet the latest new recruit to join the ranks and we’re still in early July.
Whilst the majority of the league are sitting on their hands waiting for the right moment to pounce; West Ham are the flash Cockneys who’ve strolled into the casino and have already cleaned up and moved on.
With the aforementioned Poyet already signed up as well as Cheikhou Kouyate, Aaron Cresswell and Mauro Zarate, the club are now being linked with moves for Enner Valencia and Yevhen Konoplyanka so rather than relax and recline beneath the Bubbles; the club are already pursuing their next targets with all the ruthlessness of a hunter gaining rather ominously on its prey.
Words are cheap; it’s the actions of West Ham that are quite rightly exciting the fans ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Last season wasn’t enjoyable for anyone (the hat-trick of wins over Spurs aside). But this new season already has an air of optimism about it. The club have made the kind of signings which signal a sea change in terms of playing style; Poyet for example is renowned for not only his passing ability, but his ball retention skills.
Last season, whilst Hammers fans were dissenting over the style of football and the much tottered out phrase ‘the West Ham way’ the favourite question on the lips of journalists and pundits alike was ‘What do the West Ham fans want?’
Well I hope they’re paying attention to the goings on down Green Street because this is EXACTLY what the fans want; the club showing some ambition to not just stay in the league by playing mediocre football, but actually bringing in the quality to compete.
Merely staying up this season will not be enough; Sam knows that, the owners made it quite clear a top-10 finish is expected this season and kudos to Gold and Sullivan for giving Sam the funds to bring in the kind of quality that can make that happen.
Last season when the injuries piled up, Matt Taylor was deployed in a central midfield role due to lack of genuine alternatives…this coming season however Diame, Noble, Kouyate and Poyet will be scrapping for a starting birth, now that, relatively speaking, is an embarrassment of riches.
Whether or not Mathieu Valbuena, Konoplyanka or Valencia rock up at the Boleyn in the coming weeks, one thing is for sure…the Hammers are definitely moving in the right direction.
