Jermain Defoe was delighted with his sensational opener in Spurs’ 3-1 win over West Ham on Sunday, rating it as one of his best goals for the club.

The England striker controlled a pass from Kyle Walker before beating three West Ham defenders and blasting home from outside the box.

The goal set Spurs on the way to victory, as Gareth Bale added a second after half time before Defoe grabbed his second.

Reflecting on his stunning opener, Defoe told Tottenham’s official website: “Kyle pinged the ball into me and I thought ‘wow, get that under control’ but I managed to turn, ran with it and my first intention wasn’t to shoot but it opened up and I just wanted to get a shot off. I was delighted when it went in.”

He continued: “It’s right up there in my goals for Spurs, top five. It’s such a great feeling to get a goal like that, I’m sure you can imagine.

The 30-year-old was pleased with the win over his former club and said it was richly deserved.

“I thought we deserved it, we had chances in the first half and it was important to get that goal before half-time,” he said.

“We came out in the second half more relaxed and the second goal was key, Gareth scored that and after that it was comfortable, to be honest.

“I thought from the first minute, without the ball as well, pressing, playing from the back, the whole performance was fantastic.”
