Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez claims Liverpool had the opportunity to sign much-maligned striker Andy Carroll for as little as £1million in 2009.
Carroll, now on loan at West Ham, who host Benitez’s side on Saturday afternoon, eventually joined Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool for a staggering £35million in January 2011.
Benitez has now admitted the Reds missed the chance to save themselves at least £30million towards the end of his six-year reign at the club.
“He played the Youth Cup at Anfield and we were watching him, a young player with power,” he said.
“It was an option, he was cheaper. Take the ‘three’ off the £35million. Quite cheap.”
Yaya Sanogo says a meeting with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was enough to persuade him to snub a move to Lille and join the Gunners instead.
