West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is worried that Joe Cole’s wage demands could stand in the way of the Liverpool man making a return to Upton Park in January.
Cole, who has also been linked with Harry Redknapp’s QPR, reportedly earns in the region of £90,000 a week at Liverpool but has fallen badly out of favour with manager Brendan Rodgers.
Allardyce has made no secret of his interest in Cole, who came through the ranks at West Ham as a youngster, but he admits wages could prove a stumbling block to either a permanent transfer or a loan move.
“Joe would be a situation for us where we would look at it yes,” said Allardyce, whose depleted squad has been hit by major injury problems in recent weeks.
“I think that would depend on what the situation was in terms of Joe.
“There’s one thing we certainly can’t do at the moment – we couldn’t afford what Joe Cole earns.
“I think that’s one of our bigger problems today. It’s not the size of transfer fees anymore – it’s the size of players’ wages that becomes the ultimate problem for you.”
