Transfer news: Andre Villas-Boas provides update on Luka Modric’s future
Tottenham star Luka Modric has been training on his own as speculation about his future intensifies.
The Croatia international, who attracted head coach Andre Villas-Boas’ ire after refusing to travel on the north Londoner’s pre-season tour, has been linked with a move to Manchester United and Real Madrid but no offer has met Spurs’ asking price.
“He’s been training separately still, it’s important for Luka to feel mentally ready to come back to first-team training,” Villas-Boas said.
“It’s important because these boys (team-mates) are at a different level in terms of preparation, concentrating and commitment.
“The player has to understand that the club can’t do anything about other clubs’ offers, we have a value, an interest that we have to defend and we are waiting for if the offer is not met to re-integrate the player.”
This is the second summer in a row that Modric and Villa-Boas have been the subjects of the transfer saga as the Portuguese boss tried to sign the playmaker for former club Chelsea.
“We’ll try to solve it as soon as possible, obviously it’s the second time Luka has passed through this situation,” the Spurs head coach added.
“It’s obviously difficult for him but the chairman is defending the club’s interest and value. The player has to understand that we want also to look at this current situation, but the fact that the offer doesn’t meet the chairman’s demands means we cannot do anything. The player is a good professional and hopefully he will return to the team.”
