Essex FA Referee Development Officer James Lisher has praised The FA National Game Referees Department who recently announced the launch of the FA Carlsberg Referee Awards to recognise volunteers who give up their time for the game and fellow match officials.

Howard Webb, Select Group referee, and Danny Mills ex-England International player, together with two local referees, helped launch the awards to the press at Wembley Stadium recently.

The awards are designed to reward volunteers such as referee mentors, coaches, tutors, assessors, and referees, who perform a valuable role to support football in the National Game. There are six award categories, including:

o Outstanding Contribution to Refereeing

o Referee Award (18-25 Years) for Outstanding Performance and Contribution

o Women Referee Award for Outstanding Performance and Contribution

o Outstanding Contribution to Refereeing from a Local Partner League Involved Within The National Referee Development Programme

o Outstanding Contribution to Refereeing Within a Referee Development Setting (Must Be Over 18 Years of Age)

o Outstanding Contribution to Refereeing from Volunteers (Mentors, Tutors, Coaches and Assessors)

In addition to the national categories, local awards will also be created for each of the 50 County FAs

isher, who operates from the Essex FA office in Chelmsford, said: “Recognising the efforts of referees is an excellent way of retaining existing match officials, as well as showing anyone who’s thinking of taking the course that they’ll be appreciated.

“I look forward to seeing how many nominations come in.”

Webb, a Premier League and FIFA listed referee since 2005, added: “It’s great for Carlsberg and The FA to be launching these annual awards, recognising the good work referees do up and down the country.

“I’ve progressed from the local Rotherham leagues to refereeing the biggest matches and top players in world football.

“I hope by highlighting the good work referees do at all levels it encourages more people to be involved.”

Anyone can nominate, and be nominated, for the awards which will culminate in a presentation event at a high profile game at Wembley Stadium in 2013.

Nominations are now open at www.thefa.com/my-football/referee and will remain open until February 8.
