Zakir wants winning feeling to continue
London APSA boss Zakir Hussain hopes the winning feeling can stay that little bit longer as he prepares his side for the Essex Senior League Newham derby with Clapton on Saturday.
It has been a great five days for the Terence McMillan Stadium-based side, winning three matches to go into the match with the Tons full of confidence.
Having beaten Sporting Bengal United 4-2 last Thursday for their first league win of the season, they enjoyed a thrilling 5-4 FA Vase success at Crawley Green on Saturday.
And APSA rounded it off with a 1-0 SNT Cup final victory over Tower Hamlets on Monday to leave Hussain naturally delighted at his side’s recent form.
“It has been a good last couple of weeks,” he said. “There are a lot of youngsters in the team and so far the results have been good.
“The main thing is we have had a settled side. The youngsters don’t have any baggage with them as well. They are just keen to turn up and play and that’s helped.”
But Hussain is certain there will not be any over confidence going into the derby against Chris Wood’s improved Clapton. “They are doing a lot better than last year and though they may not have won many games, they are improving and you can see that with the draws they have picked up,” he added.
“Winning is a great feeling and everyone at the club is enjoying it, but we have to be wary of Clapton. We won’t be taking them lightly.”
Josh Thomas continues to bang in the goals for APSA, having netted five goals in his last three games, including a hat-trick in the FA Vase victory which netted £600 in prize money and a second qualifying round tie with Wellingborough Whitworths (September 21).
Hussain has been craving a goalscorer for some time and he finally hopes they have the right man.
“Josh has only been around three or four weeks, but he has been great,” he said. “The target was always to get a goalscorer as we’ve struggled in that position for a few years, but Josh has come in and hopefully he is the answer.”
