Essex Senior League: Clapton 4 Ilford 0
Clapton marked 125 years at the Old Spotted Dog ground with a resounding Essex Senior League triumph over Ilford last night.
But it could have been so different for the visitors had Eden Nelson taken his chance in the opening minutes, when he headed wide from Ryan Gardiner’s pinpoint free kick.
It was mostly one-way traffic after that and Jerome Martelli fired Clapton ahead after 24 minutes with a rasping shot, which cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar.
Four minutes later Tom Jeffes doubled the home side’s advantage following some sterling work down the right flank from Raphael Duyile.
And Clapton, who lost 2-0 at Basildon on Saturday, could have extended their lead further before the break but Duyile’s penalty came back off a post.
There was no let-up for Ilford – who went down 3-2 at Tower Hamlets on Saturday – in the second half, though, as Jerome Jarriette dusted himself off to add a third from the spot after Luke Powell had floored the Tons man.
Martelli then showed sublime skill before adding a fourth, after Ilford keeper Jordan Sole had denied him on at least three occasions.
Ilford rallied late on and Powell’s header beat Pepe Diagne, but struck the woodwork, while Brendan Cavalier’s strike flew frustratingly high and wide, rather summing up the visitor’s evening.
Ilford: Sole, Hill, Powell, Graves, Cavalier, Russell (Hinds-Cadette), Cowan, Lockwood, Sinclair (Hoxhaj), Nelson (Duguid), Gardiner.
*Goals from Kaine Wilson and Syrus Gordon were enough to earn Tower Hamlets a 2-1 win at Basildon, which moved AJ Olatunbosun’s men up to second place in the table.
Sporting Bengal host basement boys London Bari tonight (Wednesday), while London APSA welcome Barking to the Terence McMillan Stadium tomorrow (Thursday).
