Striker Adam Cunnington close to agreeing deal elsewhere

Adam Cunnington’s desire for regular first-team football was the main reason for his departure from Dagenham & Redbridge, according to the 24-year-old striker, writes Colin Munford.

Cunnington was brought to Daggers in late November, but featured in only nine games for the club in that time, despite making his move from then Blue Square Premier side Kettering Town permanent in the January transfer window until 2014.

But after discussions with boss John Still, and craving regular first-team football, Cunnington has departed Victoria Road by mutual consent last Friday, and the striker was disappointed things didn’t quite work out.

“It was just one of those things, it just never really worked out. I leave the club on amicable terms and wish them all the best,” said Cunnington, who spent the last two months of the season on loan at Alfreton Town in the Blue Square Premier.

“I sat down with John and was told I wouldn’t be getting regular first-team action. I am not a player who enjoys not playing come 3pm on a Saturday, or one that likes to sit in the stands and first-team football was something I wanted to go in search of.

“It is always frustrating when that happens, they had the FA Cup run and I couldn’t be part of that being cup tied. The form started to dip, and when teams do that managers turn to their most experienced players to help get them out of that.

But despite his time being brief with the Daggers, Cunnington feels he has learnt a lot from his foray into the Football League.

“At every club and manager you always learn new things,” he added. “It was my first league club and I was keen to take the opportunity.

“The standard of players in the league is very high and you can always learn from different coaches.

“John and his coaching staff were always approachable as soon as I went there but it’s one of those things.”

Since leaving Victoria Road, Cunnington has had a number of possible suitors and was set to sign for a Blue Square Premier club by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, the club’s home Capital One Cup match with Coventry City has been pencilled in for Tuesday, August 14, 7.45pm kick-off.
