German club Borussia Monchengladbach appear to have given up in the race to sign Montpellier star Olivier Giroud.

Arsenal are favourites to sign the striker who was instrumental in helping the French side win their first title, scoring 21 goals in Ligue 1.

“We remain true to our policy that we do not throw our money out of the window,” Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl conceded.

“The problem in our negotiations is that we are in competition with clubs like Arsenal, and top clubs in Germany.”
