Ray Parlour backs Thomas Vermaelen for the role
Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes that Thomas Vermaelen would be an excellent captain for the Gunners if Arsene Wenger decides to strip Robin van Persie of the role.
The Dutchman revealed that he did not want to sign a new contract at the north London club and has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus in recent weeks.
The 29-year-old was named as skipper after Cesc Fabregas left the club to join Barcelona last year and after scoring over 30 goals for Arsenal last season he could also be heading out of the Emirates.
And if it does happen, another captain would be needed and the former Gunners midfielder believes that the Belgian centre back would be the ideal replacement.
“Vermaelen will do a great job as skipper,” Parlour told talkSPORT.
Arsenal’s first game of the new campaign is at home to Sunderland.
As another enthralling Premier League campaign comes to a close, it’s time to look at some of the men who made their mark.
