Pete Long to recreate Benny Goodman’s Carnegie Hall concert

15:21 04 January 2013

One of the world’s most celebrated jazz concerts will be recreated at Cadogan Hall to mark its 75th anniversary.

Pete Long, formerly of Jools Holland’s Orchestra and now leader of Ronnie Scott’s Big Band, will take on the role of Benny Goodman in a complete recreation of his 1938 appearance at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Goodman, who then the most prominent swing bandleader in America, included numbers such as Sing Sing Sing, Gene Krupa’s drum spectacular and Harry James’s Life Goes To A Party.

The concert was a defining moment of the swing era and was recorded onto acetate. The recordings were released in 1950 by Columbia and sold over a million copies.

On January 12 Pete Long and his Good Men will perform their recreation of the classic concert at London’s Cadogan Hall.

All the musicians perform the music as it would have sounded in 1938.
