West Ham do like to be beside the seaside!
29 July 2010
 | | CUP OF GLEE: The West Ham Academy boys celebrate with the Southend Trophy. |
IT'S only July, but already the Hammers have collected some silverware for the new season after winning the Southend United under-19 Youth Cup at the weekend.
Having defeated the hosts in a thrilling penalty shoot-out on Saturday, they booked a final spot against Arsenal's talented youngters after the north Londoners had beaten Dutch outfit FC Twente.
The Gunners were considered favourites for this match and that seemed to be borne out as they grabbed the lead in the first half.
Jack Werndly, who had played for the reserves at Burton Albion the previous day, missed a glorious chance to level the scores, but West Ham did manage to score an equaliser before the break, thanks to Danny Subuola's strike.
Paul Hilton's side continued to press after the restart as first-year scholar Kenzer Lee shot narrowly wide, while skipper Paco Craig rallied his troops to keep them going forward.
When the winner did arrive, it was a slightly fortunate one.
England under-16 international Blair Turgott let fly, but it took a wicked deflection off an Arsenal defender before it was able to fly into the net and make it 2-1 to West Ham.
There was still time for Robert Hall to go close for West Ham, but in the end the Hammers had already done enough to secure the trophy and start the season with a bang.
The under-18s travel to Heybridge Swifts on Saturday, before a match at Ipswich Town on Wednesday, August 4.
Tony Carr's squad will then make the short trip over to Leyton Orient on Saturday, August 7, play at Hornchurch on Tuesday, August 10 and Norwich Cty on August 14.
Last season, the Academy finished fifth in their FA Premier Academy League, reaching the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup along the way.
They will hope for even better this time round.
