Dean Ashton's going nowhere says chairman
21 March 2007
 | | STAYING PUT: That's how Hammers' chairman sees it! |
WEST HAM may be on the way out of Upton Park, but chairman Eggert Magnusson is determined to make sure that star striker Dean Ashton doesn't follow suit this summer, writes DAVE EVANS.
Ashton has been ruled out for the entire season after breaking his ankle with England last August and then undergoing a further operation on Monday, but despite that he is still a top target for a host of Premiership clubs - with Newcastle United heading the list.
However, Magnusson poured cold water on the prospect of the 23-year-old moving on.
"Dean Ashton is here to stay as I see it," confirmed the chairman this week.
"He hasn't played all season, so I have no doubts that he will be a West Ham player for years to come. He has to start playing games before he can interest other clubs, then you can start to speculate, but he has to reach the level he was at before."
That news will cheer the beleagured West Ham fans, but the chairman could not be so forthcoming about South American star Carlos Tevez and his future.
"I'm sorry, but I have no control over whether Tevez goes or stays, I thought everyone knew that, it is no secret, so how can I control that?" he said.
"When I first held a press conference here I said that I would never enter into a contract where the club doesn't own the player - it is out of the question for me.
"So I am sorry, it is out of my control, it is for his owners to decide where he goes."
That is likely to be out of Upton Park, with the big victims in the whole transfer debacle being the West Ham fans.
