A CULT classic of Caribbean cinema has been transformed into a stage show at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.

The musical version of The Harder They Come, the 70s movie that launched the career of reggae star Jimmy Cliff, stars newcomer Rolan Bell as Ivanhoe Martin, a young man who leaves the Jamaican countryside for big, bad, Kingston to seek fame and fortune.

The original 1972 was a worldwide hit, with its portrayal of Jamaican life in the raw and its reggae soundtrack.

The Theatre Royal version features a live band and strives for authenticity by using a cast made up of actors of Jamaican descent.

The show debuts at the theatre in Gerry Raffles Square, Stratford, this week and is set to run through the summer.
