Breaking News: Two escape major fire in Canning Town

22 November 2009
FIREFIGHTERS are still damping down this morning at the scene of a major blaze in Canning Town.

The crews were called to the detached house in Barking Road at around 9.15pm last night.

They eventually had the blaze under control at just after midnight, writes COLIN GRAINGER, Editor.

Two people fled the fire. One jumped from the first floor window and another made his way out of the building and fled the scene of the fire.

At one stage firefighters thought two other people were in the building, but this has now proved not to be the case.

The blaze damaged 50 per cent of the ground floor, 75 per cent of the first floor and completely damaged the roof. Plaistow firefighters were first on the scene.

Five appliances were at the scene. Crews wearing breathing apparatus fought the fire.

Around 30 firefighters were at the scene in total.

Fire investigators are now probing the cause of the blaze.
