Land safeguarded

01 December 2009
A FORM of insurance policy has been taken out to protect key regeneration land close to the Olympic Park.

Concerned over the prospect of property speculators moving in, Newham Town Hall and the Thames Gateway Development Corporation will impose a Land Use and Design guidance code covering the future development of a 13-acre site around Sugar House Lane and Three Mills.

The move is also aimed at promoting regeneration in order to create jobs, provide new housing and protect local history.

News of the impending design brief comes after it was discovered the site, which had previously been the subject of failed development proposals, is being remarketed.

It boasts an industrial heritage and unique waterside setting, and currently hosts a cluster of creative industries.

Cllr Conor McAuley, Newham Council's executive member for regeneration, said: "Establishing a framework to shape future land use will be essential in ensuring it's absolutely clear what type of development is best placed to unlock the potential of the area.
