Warning of another superbug

26 November 2007
WITH potentially-lethal superbugs MRSA and C.difficile causing fear and deaths- including in Newham - experts are now warning of another superbug.

It can cause infections and blood poisoning, attacks the very ill and is on the increase in Britain's hospitals.

The number of cases of Glycopeptide-resistant enterococci (GRE) infection has rocketed by more than 50 per cent in the last two years.

Although nowhere near as common yet as MRSA and C.diff - the Recorder has discovered that there were seven cases of GRE at Newham General Hospital in the past five years- it is causing concern as it does not respond to most treatment.

More on this story by chief reporter Susan Smith in the Newham Recorder in 48 hours time.
