ARCHAEOLOGISTS working in West Ham believe they have uncovered the remains of the 'Great Gate' of Langthorne Abbey.

The dig, a joint project between Newham Council and the Museum of London, is at Bakers Row on land that will eventually be turned into community open space.

While what is left of the medieval abbey is now mostly beneath adjacent rail lines, the new find, when excavations have been completed, is likely to remain uncovered for public viewing.

The 'history detectives' have been joined on the dig by some of the borough's residents following a council invitation to local people to get involved in the work. More of this story in this week's Recorder
