Festive drink-drink op stats revealed
02 March 2010
NEWHAM police carried out 128 breath tests and arrested 14 individuals during a met-wide operation during the festive period, from December 1 to 31 .
A further 66 arrests were made by North East Traffic officers as part of a pro-active operation in Newham targeting those drinking behind the wheel.
For the first time both traffic and borough officers were equipped with electronic screening devices (ESDs) - these are sophisticated new systems capable of recording additional information such as sex, age and location.
Borough Commander Simon Letchford said: "These are great results for Newham and illustrates our commitment in reinforcing the message about the consequences of those who choose to drink and drive, not only around Christmas, but throughout the year."
Five people were arrested on suspicion of drug driving as officers administered Field Impairment Tests (FITs). These tests involve the suspect driver undergoing a series of exercises designed to test balance, co-ordination and reaction.
Those caught drink driving can lose their licence, be fined, or sent to prison.
